What to wear in Vietnam

Vietnam is long and thin, so a two-week trip can cover three climates: a cool, misty north (Hanoi and Sapa can feel cold in winter), a central coast with its own typhoon season, and a hot, tropical south. Casual, breathable clothes work everywhere, with modest outfits for pagodas and a warm layer for the north or Ha Long Bay cruises in winter. Local tailors in Hoi An can make clothes in 24 hours — leave space in your bag.

Dress code

  • Cover shoulders and knees at pagodas, temples and Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum (strictly enforced there).
  • Remove shoes before entering homes and some temples.
  • Beachwear stays at the beach; dress casually-modest in towns.
  • Bring a layer for overnight buses and trains — the AC is set very cold.

Plugs: Type A / C (and some F), 220V.

What to wear for…

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Hanoi

Strict dress code: no shorts, short skirts or sleeveless tops. Hats come off inside.

Ha Long Bay cruise

Swimwear and quick-dry clothes for kayaking, and smart-casual for dinner on board. Winter decks are chilly.

Sapa and Ha Giang trekking

Hiking shoes with grip, a rain jacket and real warm layers from November to February.

Hoi An tailors

Get clothes made in 24–48 hours. Pack light and bring photos of styles you like.

North cool season (Dec–Feb) Jan, Feb, Dec

Hanoi is 14–20°C and drizzly, Sapa near freezing at night, while the south is dry and 32°C. Layer: tees for the south, a fleece or light down jacket for the north.

Spring (Mar–Apr) Mar, Apr

Arguably the best time for a full-country trip: warm (21–29°C) in the north, dry and hot in the south. Light layers and breathable clothes.

Autumn (Oct–Nov) Oct, Nov

The north is warm, dry and clear (20–30°C) — beautiful in Ha Giang and Sapa. Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue) is in its rainy, flood-prone season. Light layers plus a rain jacket.

For men

Vietnamese men in cities wear long trousers with short-sleeved shirts or polos more often than shorts, but shorts are fine for tourists in the south and on the coast. Temples and pagodas expect knees and shoulders covered, and Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum strictly requires long trousers and sleeves. Bring a warm jacket for Hanoi and the north between December and February.

Common packing mistakes

  • Assuming Vietnam is hot year-round. Hanoi winter nights are around 14°C and Sapa can frost.
  • Wearing shorts to the Mausoleum or the bigger pagodas.
  • Ignoring the regional seasons. The central coast floods in October and November, while the south is dry.
  • Over-packing when Hoi An tailoring is so cheap.
