What to wear in Greece

Greece is made for linen and sandals: summers are hot, dry and sunny, and island life is relaxed. Two things catch visitors out — the Meltemi wind that makes island evenings cool in summer, and the dress code at monasteries and Orthodox churches (Meteora, Mount Athos region, island chapels), which requires covered shoulders and, for women, a skirt below the knee. Pack flat, grippy sandals: Acropolis marble and island steps are slippery.

Dress code

  • Monasteries and churches: covered shoulders; women in skirts below the knee (wraps are often provided), men in long trousers.
  • Beachwear is fine on the beach and in beach bars, but cover up in towns and villages.
  • Wear flat shoes with grip for the Acropolis and island steps — heels are banned at some archaeological sites.
  • Dinner is relaxed smart-casual; Mykonos and Santorini evenings are dressier.

Plugs: Type C / F (two round pins), 230V.

What to wear for…

Acropolis and ancient sites

No shade and slippery, polished marble. Wear grippy flat shoes (high heels are banned at ancient sites), a hat and sunscreen, and bring water.

Monasteries (Meteora)

Women need skirts below the knee, and wraps are lent at the door. Men need long trousers, and everyone covers their shoulders.

Island hopping

Ferry decks are windy, even in July. Bring a light layer and keep a day bag with swimwear, since luggage is often stowed below deck.

Beaches and boat days

Many Greek beaches are pebbly, so bring water shoes, as well as swimwear, a cover-up and a strapped hat for the meltemi wind.

Winter (Dec–Feb) Jan, Feb, Dec

Mild in Athens (7–14°C) with rainy spells; many island hotels close. A jacket, sweaters and waterproof shoes.

For men

Greek men keep summer simple: linen shirts, shorts and espadrilles or leather sandals. In Athens, long trousers look better in the evening, and nightlife on Mykonos and Santorini leans dressy-casual, with a linen shirt, chinos and loafers. Monasteries, including Meteora and Athens' churches, require long trousers, and shorts will get you turned away.

Common packing mistakes

  • Wearing heels on ancient marble and on cobbled, stepped island lanes.
  • Visiting Meteora in shorts.
  • Underestimating the meltemi, a strong summer wind in the Cyclades that steals hats and chills evenings.
  • Assuming Greece is warm in winter. Athens is about 7–14°C and rainy in January.
