🇸🇬 Southeast Asia

What to wear in Singapore

Singapore is 31°C and humid every single day of the year, with sudden tropical downpours. Dress for heat and rain outside, and for freezing air-conditioning in malls, MRT trains and restaurants. Singaporeans dress neat and casual — think breathable smart-casual — and religious sites from mosques to Hindu temples ask for modest, covered clothing.

Dress code

  • Cover shoulders and knees at mosques and temples (Sultan Mosque, Sri Mariamman, Buddha Tooth Relic Temple) — robes are often lent at the door.
  • Smart-casual is the norm; some rooftop bars (e.g. Marina Bay Sands) refuse flip-flops, sleeveless tops for men and sportswear.
  • Indoor AC is very cold — carry a light layer.
  • Rain arrives fast; a compact umbrella doubles as sun protection.

Plugs: Type G (UK-style three pins), 230V.

What to wear for…

Temples and mosques

At Sri Mariamman, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sultan Mosque, cover your shoulders and knees and take your shoes off. Sultan Mosque lends robes at the door.

Gardens by the Bay domes

The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest are cool and misty inside, around 23–25°C. A thin layer is welcome after the heat outside.

Rooftop bars and fine dining

Smart-casual is enforced at most rooftop bars: no beachwear, flip-flops or sleeveless tops for men.

Hawker centres and Sentosa

Completely casual, but keep swimwear for the beach and pool.

Northeast monsoon (Nov–Jan) Jan, Nov, Dec

The wettest months, with long rainy spells and slightly cooler days (30°C). Quick-dry, breathable outfits, waterproof shoes and an umbrella.

For men

Singapore is casual and practical. In the daytime, shorts, a polo or linen shirt and sneakers are fine almost everywhere. In the evening, nicer restaurants and rooftop bars, such as those at Marina Bay Sands, ask for smart-casual: long trousers or tailored shorts and a collared shirt, with no flip-flops or singlets. Indoors is heavily air-conditioned, so a light overshirt is useful.

Common packing mistakes

  • Not carrying a layer. Malls, the MRT and cinemas are icy.
  • Packing heavy jeans for 31°C and 80% humidity.
  • Getting caught by sudden afternoon thunderstorms without a compact umbrella.
  • Wearing leather or suede shoes that get ruined in downpours.
