What to wear in Paris

Parisians dress simply but deliberately: neutral colours, good fabrics, one interesting piece and shoes that can handle cobblestones. You do not need to be fancy, but gym wear, logo tees and flip-flops instantly mark you as a tourist (and a pickpocket target). The weather is changeable in every season, so a good outer layer and a compact umbrella do most of the work.

Dress code

  • Neutral, well-fitted basics (navy, black, beige, white) blend in; loud prints and logos stand out.
  • Cover shoulders inside churches such as Notre-Dame and Sacré-CÅ“ur; a scarf works.
  • Leave gym wear and flip-flops for the hotel — smart sneakers or loafers are the local default.
  • Nicer restaurants expect smart-casual in the evening: a shirt or blouse rather than a tee.
  • Carry a zipped crossbody bag in front of you on the Metro and around major sights.

Plugs: Type E / F (two round pins), 230V.

What to wear for…

Museums and churches

The Louvre and Orsay are casual, but you'll walk for hours on hard floors — cushioned shoes matter. Cover shoulders in churches like Sacré-Cœur.

Café terraces and dinners

Smart-casual is the norm: a shirt or blouse, a good jacket and clean shoes. Michelin-starred restaurants expect jackets for men.

Eiffel Tower and Seine cruises

It's windy at the top and on the river, even in summer — bring a layer.

Versailles day trip

Huge gardens on gravel paths: flat shoes, sun hat in summer, a raincoat otherwise.

Winter (Dec–Feb) Jan, Feb, Dec

Grey, damp and 3–8°C, rarely freezing. A long wool coat, a big scarf and waterproof boots are the Parisian winter uniform.

Spring (Mar–May) Mar, Apr, May

Fresh mornings, mild afternoons (12–20°C) and quick showers. The trench coat was made for exactly this.

Summer (Jun–Aug) Jun, Jul, Aug

Warm (23–26°C) with occasional heatwaves above 35°C, long light evenings and few air-conditioned spaces. Linen and cotton, light colours, and something for cooler nights.

Autumn (Sep–Nov) Sep, Oct, Nov

September is warm and golden, October brings rain and 15°C, November is cold and damp. Layer knits under a trench, then swap to a wool coat.

For men

Parisian men keep it simple and well-fitted: dark jeans or chinos, an Oxford shirt or fine knit, a navy or camel coat and minimalist leather sneakers or loafers. Shorts are rare in the city outside summer heatwaves and almost never worn to dinner. Avoid gym shorts, sports jerseys and big logos — they mark you as a tourist instantly.

Common packing mistakes

  • Wearing athleisure and running shoes everywhere — it's the most obvious tourist tell.
  • Packing only for sunny photos; Paris rains in every season.
  • Heels on cobblestones in Montmartre and the Marais.
  • Carrying an open tote on the Metro — pickpockets target them.
