Bali is warm all year (around 30°C), relaxed and very casual — beachwear, linen and sandals cover almost everything. The exception is temples: every visitor must wear a sarong and sash, and shoulders should be covered. Most temples lend or rent sarongs, but owning one is easier and makes great photos. Pick your month around the dry season (April–October) versus the wet season (November–March).

Dress code
- Temples require a sarong (kamen) and sash for everyone, and covered shoulders — rent one at the gate or bring your own.
- Swimwear is for beaches and pools; cover up in shops, restaurants and villages.
- Ubud and the highlands are cooler at night — bring a light layer.
- Women who are menstruating are asked not to enter temples, per local custom.
- Remove shoes before entering homes and some shops.
Plugs: Type C / F (two round pins), 230V.
What to wear for…
Temples (Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Besakih)
A sarong and sash (selendang) are required for everyone, with shoulders covered. Many temples lend them, but your own is cleaner and quicker. At Uluwatu, monkeys grab sunglasses and hats, so put them away.
Rice terraces and waterfalls
Paths are muddy and slippery. Wear sandals with real grip or water shoes, and quick-dry clothes you can swim in.
Mount Batur sunrise trek
You start around 2am, and the summit is windy and chilly before dawn. Bring a fleece, a windbreaker and proper shoes for loose volcanic gravel.
Beach clubs and surfing
Swimwear with a cover-up by day, and a slip dress or linen shirt for sunset. Surfers want a rash guard and reef booties for the sharp reef breaks.
Dry season (Apr–Oct) Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct
Sunny, lower humidity and around 29–31°C. The best time for beaches, surfing and volcano hikes (bring a fleece for Mount Batur sunrise).

For men
Board shorts, linen shirts and sandals are the uniform. Nobody dresses up much, apart from upscale beach clubs and restaurants in Seminyak and Canggu, where a linen shirt and chinos fit. At temples every man needs a sarong and sash, even in long trousers. Walking around town shirtless is frowned on away from the beach.
Common packing mistakes
- Walking through town or into shops in swimwear.
- Bringing only flip-flops when waterfalls and rice terraces need grip.
- Forgetting Ubud and the highlands are noticeably cooler at night than the coast.
- Leaving sunglasses on your head at Uluwatu temple, where the monkeys are expert thieves.
