🇮🇹 Southern Europe

What to wear in Italy

Italians take dressing well seriously, even for a walk to the café. Clean lines, good shoes and natural fabrics are the rule. The one thing that catches visitors out is the church dress code — St Peter's, the Vatican Museums and most cathedrals refuse entry with bare shoulders or knees, and they do check. Summers are hot; plan for linen and a scarf you can throw over your shoulders.

Dress code

  • Shoulders and knees must be covered in churches and the Vatican — guards turn people away.
  • Carry a light scarf or shawl in summer to cover up quickly.
  • Swimwear and bare chests are for the beach only; some towns fine people walking around in them.
  • Smart-casual is normal for dinner; shorts are uncommon on men in the evening.
  • Wear broken-in, flat shoes — Rome, Florence and Venice are cobblestone cities.

What to wear for…

Vatican and churches

Shoulders and knees must be covered for St Peter's, the Sistine Chapel and most cathedrals — guards check. Long linen trousers or a midi skirt plus a light scarf solve it in summer.

Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre

Lots of steps and hiking paths: grippy sandals or sneakers, swimwear under a cover-up, and a sun hat.

Dinners and aperitivo

Italians dress up a little in the evening: a linen shirt or dress, loafers or sandals. Beachwear is not okay in restaurants.

Venice

Endless bridges and stairs — leave the wheeled suitcase light and wear flat shoes. In November and winter, high water can flood streets.

Winter (Dec–Feb) Jan, Feb, Dec

Rome is mild (4–13°C) and often sunny; the north is cold and foggy, the Dolomites snowy. A warm coat and boots for the north, a mid-weight jacket for Rome.

For men

Italian men dress sharply even for casual outings: slim chinos or linen trousers, a well-fitted polo or shirt, and good leather loafers or clean sneakers. Shorts are acceptable at the beach and in heat for sightseeing, but long trousers are needed for churches and look better at dinner. Avoid flip-flops in the city and football shirts if you want to blend in.

Common packing mistakes

  • Planning a Vatican visit on a shorts-and-tank-top day.
  • Heels or new shoes on Rome's cobblestones.
  • Walking around towns in swimwear — some places fine you for it.
  • Packing only summer clothes for the Dolomites or northern lakes, which are much cooler.
