What to wear in New York

New Yorkers dress practically and a little sharply — lots of black, good sneakers and a serious coat in winter. There is no dress code to worry about beyond some upscale restaurants and rooftop bars. The big thing is the climate swing: winters are properly cold and windy (below freezing is common), summers are hot and humid, and buildings and subways are heavily heated or air-conditioned.

Dress code

  • No dress code on the street — dark, practical layers blend in.
  • Upscale restaurants and rooftop bars may refuse sportswear, flip-flops or men's shorts in the evening.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are essential; most visitors walk 10+ miles a day.
  • Indoor spaces are heavily heated in winter and cold in summer — layer accordingly.

Plugs: Type A / B, 120V.

What to wear for…

Broadway and theatre

No dress code. Smart-casual is most common, and theatres are heavily air-conditioned, so bring a layer even in July.

Rooftop bars and nice restaurants

Many post dress codes: no sportswear, flip-flops or baseball caps. Dark jeans with a good top or shirt is the safe choice.

Walking the city

You will easily walk 15–25k steps a day, plus subway stairs. Cushioned sneakers you have already broken in matter more than anything else you pack.

Statue of Liberty and the ferries

Airport-style security with limits on large bags. It is windy on the water and at the crown, even in summer.

Winter (Dec–Feb) Jan, Feb, Dec

Below freezing at night, around 4°C by day, with wind chill and snowstorms. A long down coat, thermals and waterproof boots are essential.

For men

New York men dress in dark, practical layers: slim jeans or chinos, a tee or Oxford shirt, a bomber, chore jacket or overcoat, and clean sneakers that can handle 20,000 steps a day. Shorts are fine for summer sightseeing; for upscale restaurants and rooftop bars, many of which turn away athletic wear and shorts in the evening, switch to trousers and a collared shirt.

Common packing mistakes

  • Bringing brand-new shoes. Blisters by day two are the classic New York trip-ruiner.
  • Underestimating winter wind between skyscrapers. It feels far colder than the forecast.
  • Wearing heavy denim in July and August, when it is humid and the subway platforms are hotter than the street.
  • Carrying a big backpack. Museums make you check it, and it is awkward on crowded trains.
