July averages for Tokyo (Kitanomaru Park). Source

July turns hot and very humid once the rains end mid-month — expect 30°C with humidity that makes it feel like 35°C+. Summer festivals and fireworks start; renting a yukata for a matsuri is a great experience. Pack the lightest, most breathable clothes you own, plus a thin cover-up for temples.

☀️ By day

Loose linen or cotton, a sun hat and breathable sandals or sneakers.

🌙 Evening

A yukata for festivals, or light linen with a thin layer for icy air-con.

What's on in July

Typical dates. Many festivals follow lunar calendars, so check this year's dates before you book.

Gion Matsuri, Kyoto

All of July; float parade July 17, festive evenings July 14–16

Kyoto's biggest festival. On the evenings before the parade the streets fill with food stalls and people in yukata — wearing one (rent or buy) is welcome and fun. It's hot and humid, so bring a fan.

Sumida River Fireworks, Tokyo

Last Saturday of July

Around a million people watch from riverbanks and rooftops. Yukata and geta sandals are the classic look; otherwise wear light clothes and comfortable shoes for a long wait.

Dress code

  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples and shrines; a light cardigan solves it in summer.
  • Shoes come off in temples, ryokan, some restaurants and fitting rooms — slip-ons and clean, hole-free socks save time.
  • Very revealing or low-cut tops stand out more than short hemlines; locals dress modestly up top.
