April averages for Tokyo (Kitanomaru Park). Source

April is peak cherry-blossom season in the first half of the month — the most beautiful and the most crowded time of year. Days are pleasant (15–20°C) but evenings drop to around 10°C, which matters for night-time sakura viewing. Expect occasional showers; a trench coat and an umbrella cover both.

☀️ By day

Trench coat, light knit and comfortable sneakers — perfect blossom-photo weather.

🌙 Evening

Yozakura (night blossom viewing) is around 10°C — bring a scarf or packable down jacket.

Dress code

  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples and shrines; a light cardigan solves it in summer.
  • Shoes come off in temples, ryokan, some restaurants and fitting rooms — slip-ons and clean, hole-free socks save time.
  • Very revealing or low-cut tops stand out more than short hemlines; locals dress modestly up top.
